Better cities are possible

These podcasts and youtube channels helped me to understand the role walking, cycling and public transit can play in improving our cities, from noise and air pollution to even making them better places to drive by reducing traffic on the roads. My favourite was Not Just Bikes as it gave great examples of how cities can be better and I enjoyed how easy the information was to digest. Some of the videos I found the most interesting were based on work by strongtowns.org. Strong towns also has a youtube channel and a podcast.

Not Just Bikes videos are stories of great urban planning and urban experiences from Amsterdam and the Netherlands. The creator of this youtube channel grew up in car dependent London, Canada and moved to Amsterdam in the Netherlands so that he and his family could have a better quality of life free from dependence on cars.
Climate Town
The War on Cars is a podcast about the epic, hundred years’ war between The Car and The City. It is produced in New York city and as such has a U.S. focus.
What on Earth
Oh The Urbanity aims to make concise, informative, and entertaining videos combining streetscapes and demographic data. They have a particular interest in making cities more walkable, bikeable, and all around easier and safer to get around in. Their videos focus on Canadian cities.
Something you can do

What can I do?

Most importantly, if you can, walk, bike, roll, or take public transit to where you need to go. Secondly, get involved in local organizations supporting and or advocating for active and public transit. If you are in the Halifax N.S. Canada area (where these posters originated) I would encourage you to check out the Halifax Cycling Coalition and It's More Than Buses. You might also like to participate in some community events like kidical mass halifax to help grow community support for the safety of vulnerable road users.
If you like these posters, you may want to put up posters in your area. My hope is that putting up posters will make the issue more visible in the real world and make it harder to ignore the negative impacts of cars on our cities. If you would like to put up posters in your local area feel free to download, modify, and or print copies of these poster to put up in your area. These posters are © 2022 by Chris Geroux, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
These poster were created using the free and open source vector graphics program Inkscape which can be used if you wish to modify the poster. Scalar vector graphic (svg) files of the posters are available which are best if you want to modify the posters. If you just want to print the posters as they are, a pdf file is likely what you want. In addition to posters I have started putting up some stickers too. It turns out that it takes a bit of time to put up posters by supplementing with stickers I hope to be able to increase the number and geographic area in which these ideas are encouraged.
